Two local students named National Merit Semifinalists

Two local students have been named Semi-Finalists in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) competition.

Chesterton High School senior Branden Wong, and Andrean High School senior Thomas Pampalone.

They are among the nationís 16,000 Semifinalists announced in the competition for some 7,500 Merit Scholarships, worth more than $31 million, to be offered next spring.

Wong and Pampalone were named based on selection index scores on the 2017 PSAT/NMSQT, in the 64th annual competition.

Wong is the son of Kwan and Yu Wong of Chesterton.

He is active on the varsity tennis team, Science Olympiad, Speech and Debate and is a member of National Honor Society (NHS).

Pampalone is the son of Heidi and Tom Pampalone, of Chesterton.

He is President of the National Honor Society at Andrean, Captain of the Tennis team, competes in the Spell Bowl, Quiz Bowl, and Academic Super Bowl and is involved in theater.
