Contrary to what was printed in Thursday’s Chesterton Tribune, the Indiana Department of Education did in fact release the 2016 ISTEP+ scores yesterday for non-public and public schools yesterday.

Last year, the DOE had separated scoresheets for non-public schools from the public school corporations in its press packet. For 2016, the scores were grouped together.

The Tribune regrets the omission.

Included in the information were the scores for St. Patrick School in Chesterton which scored higher above the state averages than all the schools in the Duneland School Corporation and Discovery Charter School.

St. Patrick’s Grade 3-8 totals came to 93.1 percent passing the English/Language Arts section and 93.8 percent passing the Math portion. Passing both were 90.0 percent.

For comparison, in 2015 the school’s total was 94.4 percent passing the English/Language Arts section, 97.2 percent passing the Math portion and 92.4 percent passing both.

The state average for grades 3-8 was 66.1 percent passing English/Language Arts, 58.9 percent for passing Math and 51.6 percent passing both.

In the Duneland Schools, the overall passing rate for English/Language Arts was 73.2 percent for grades 3-8, 72.6 percent for Math and passing both was 63.3 percent.

At Discovery Charter School, the overall passing rate for English/Language Arts was 80.0 percent, 77.6 percent for Math and passing both was 70.8 percent.

The state average of students passing both portions dropped from 53.5 percent in 2015 to 51.6 percent in 2016.

St. Patrick Principal Rick Rupcich told the Tribune this morning, “We’re extremely proud of our students and faculty. We’ve been a four-star school since 2009 and our ISTEP scores (for English and Math) are above 90 percent.”

He said he credits the school’s success to the collaboration between teachers, students and parents.
