Speech team third at Plymouth

Senior Mike Leopold helped lead the Speech Team to a third place finish at the William Young Memorial Speech Invitational at Plymouth High School this past weekend.

Twenty-four schools and over 500 entries took part in the all varsity tournament, which recognized the top 12 in each of the 14 events.

Leopold was the tournament champion in broadcasting and also placed sixth in original oratory. He was presented with the team trophy in recognition of his performance and his leadership.

Fellow senior Andrew Hogan also had a strong showing, placing in three events. Hogan was third in prose, fifth in humor, and eighth in drama.

Senior Cassidy Peretin finished well in two events with a fourth place in original oratory and a fifth place in declamation. Also placing in declamation were Mikaela Meyer (10) in eighth and Jennifer Kattalia (11) in ninth. Kattalia also placed eleventh in drama.

Joining Leopold in broadcasting were freshmen Galen Wong in sixth and sophomore Layla Mooradian in seventh. Junior Eric Dreischerf placed in two events, finishing sixth in U.S. extemporaneous speaking and tenth in impromptu.

Juniors Kaylee Oates – humor - and Spencer Gordon – international extemporaneous – were eighth and tenth, respectively in their events. Fellow juniors Kiera Quealy and Samantha Read finished seventh and tenth, respectively, in original performance. Finally, freshman Sawyer Hallas placed eleventh in his first tournament doing discussion.

“I thought the students did well today. We were pleased with the number of students who advanced to finals in such a competitive tournament,” said Coach Doug Pishkur.

Munster High School was the tournament champion with 169 points followed by Ben Davis with 71. Chesterton tied with Fishers for third and won third on a tie-breaker. Each school finished with 43 points. Fifth place went to Culver Academies with 42 points.

Coaches Pishkur, Diana Gill and Sam Marshall were joined by former students Jessica Cleary, Kayla Fleming and Eric Schaefer. Also helping with judging were parents Rick Kidder, Marcia Ritchea, and Jim Vincent.

The team’s next tournament will be this weekend in Munster.
