He is, as Chesterton High School Athletic Director Gary Nallenweg put its, “probably the most accomplished and celebrated track and field athlete ever at CHS.”

He is Braden Corzan.

And at its meeting Monday night, the Duneland School Board honored him.

Corzan’s accomplishments are eminently bullet-pointable:

* He is part of six school records, including the 100- and 400-meter dashes.

* He was the Duneland Athletic Conference MVP in the 2017 and 2018 seasons.

* Corzan was a sectional champion seven times and a regional champion five times.

* In the 400-meter dash he is in the Top 15 All-Time in the State of Indiana.

* He was the 2018 Tim Bishop Times Male Athlete of the Year and the 2018 Post-Tribune Track Athlete of the Year.

* Corzan was an Indiana All-Star and the Midwest Meet of Champions Most Valuable Runner.

* He earned four IHSAA state medals.

* He was the 2018 IHSAA state champion in the 400-meter dash, making him the first Chesterton boy to win an individual track state title since 1986.

* And Corzan will be attending Indiana State University in the fall on an “almost unheard of”--Nallenweg’s words--full track scholarship.

Members thanked Corzan for his efforts on behalf of the Duneland Schools and congratulated him on his extraordinary career at CHS.

2018 Employee of the Year

In other business, the board recognized the Duneland Schools 2018 Employee of the Year: Linda Esserman, now a dispatcher in the Transportation Department but for 26 years a devoted driver of school buses, for 16 years at Yost Elementary, eight at Bailly Elementary, and two for Special Needs students.

For Esserman the best part of the job was always “her interaction with the kids,” Assistant Superintendent Monte Moffett said. “Her smile, her hello, was the first positive interaction the students on her buses had every school day.”
