New teachers and staff incoming at Duneland Schools for 2017-2018 school year

It’s once again a time of transition for the Duneland School Corporation between two school years with many hires and leaves.

At the start of Monday’s Duneland School Board meeting, Assistant Superintendent of Instruction Monte Moffett asked principals to introduce new teachers and transfers for the upcoming 2017-18 school year, many of whom have Duneland roots.

New hires

At Liberty Elementary, Lisa Hayes will teach 2nd Grade. She is a CHS alum and taught as a Title 1 teacher in Portage schools.

Rachel McCrum and Mallory Mitchell will teach 3rd Grade at LES. McCrum graduated from CHS and Butler University. Mitchell comes from Valparaiso and taught previously at Porter Twp. schools.

Jackson Elementary Principal Linda Rugg introduced Elisa Hoffman, who will teach 2nd Grade, and Samantha Furto, who will teach 3rd Grade. Furto is a CHS graduate and attended Jackson Twp. Elementary.

“I’m so happy to be back home,’ Furto said. “I can’t wait to teach kids to be everything they can be here in Chesterton.”

Meanwhile, Laura Gorski will be the vocal director at the middle school. She previously taught at Hebron Schools and Pierce Middle School in Merrillville.

CHS Principal Jeff Van Drie announced that Erin Cochran will be transferring from CMS to CHS to teach Math and Justin Martinson is transferring from Liberty Elementary to teach German at CHS, replacing Michelle Bartels, who retired this year.

Also at CHS, Brian Hennigar will teach Science, succeeding longtime teacher Bill Bailey.

“I do have some big shoes to fill but thankfully I am a size 16 so I think that will help,” Hennigar said. “I look forward to giving everything I have.”

Susan O’Connell will teach Business at CHS and Gretchen Arthur has been hired as a guidance counselor.

Also transferring, Kim Marshall, who has taught Social Studies at CMS, will be an integration specialist for Duneland.

Mary Ann Martin, who taught Family and Consumer Sciences at CHS, will transfer to Jackson Elementary to teach 4th Grade.

Other appointments include Molly Stewart as a CMS attendance secretary, Lisa Ilgin as the main office secretary at Jackson, Diane Brown as attendance secretary at CHS and Gianna Fraley as media secretary at Brummitt Elementary.

Trenton Tyler will be a system specialist for Duneland and Arlene Miller and Sarah Armstrong have been hired as kitchen helpers.

Summer help for groundskeeping are Kelly Delvalle, Jimmy Hasselburger, Dalton Claussen and Drew Berry.


In Moffett’s personnel report are coaching appointments for CMS and CHS.

At CHS, Mark Anderson will be the Boys Varsity Basketball assistant coach, Adam White will be the Boys Junior Varsity Basketball coach and Jordan Lewis will be the Boys Freshman Basketball assistant coach.

Andy Wheele will again coach Boys/Girls Diving at CHS. Dawn Matthys will be the head Gymnastics coach and Christy Dzierba will be the assistant Gymnastics coach. Sarah Fratto will coach Cheerleading. Keith Davison will be the Wrestling assistant coach and Alex Boatright will coach Freshman Wrestling. Tom Moeller will be the assistant coach for Boys Cross Country. Clint Brown will the assistant coach for Boys Track and Jim Socha will be the assistant coach for Girls Track. Scott Bartlett will be the volunteer coach for Girls Track.

Tom Bour will be the Girls Tennis head coach and Christine Roof will be the assistant coach. Tom Bour will be the Boys Tennis head coach.

At CMS, Nick Bamber will be the head coach for 7th Grade Girls Basketball. Becky Holt will be the 8th Grade Volleyball head coach and Kim Stento will be the head coach for 7th Grade Volleyball. Tom Garzella will be the head Football coach.


Retiring this school year are Duneland Schools payroll processor Debi Harlow and Food Service worker Shirley Kay Trowbridge.


Resigning this month are CMS Social Studies teacher Kim Marshall, Jackson Elementary 2nd Grade teacher Vicki Dalton, 7th Grade Volleyball coach Diane Mrak, CHS Guidance Counselor Diane Brown, CMS instructional aide Kaitlin Bruning, bus driver Sarah Pistorio, WIS media secretary Linda Schwab, 8th Grade Volleyball coach Anne Stark, 7th Grade Volleyball coach Kelly Williamson, Yost School instructional aide Heather Burkus, CHS Quiz Bowl coach Anna Zervos, Natural Helpers leader Robyn McBride, CMS instructional aide/lifeguard Cathy Schuster, 7th Grade Boys Basketball coach Adam Tenbarge, technology aide Trenton Tyler, custodians Sara Parker and Thomas Cotner, CHS Boys Varsity Basketball assistant coach Bob Nemtuda and CHS utility aide Heather Pflug.

Driver’s Ed

Listed were personnel for Duneland’s summer school and driver’s education instructors.

Teaching Driver’s Ed this summer are Jason Gast, Greg Kearney, Robin Hanson, Dennis Leonard, Henry Matthys and Tina Clindaniel.
