Jeff Hamstra and Tommy Berrywill replace outgoing CHS Athletic director Garry Nallenwegand and Assistant Director Jim Goetz.

Nallenweg and Goetz recently announced their plans to retire effective June 30. At last night’s Duneland School Board meeting, Chesterton High School Principal Brent Martinson introduced their replacements who will take over July 1.

“We have been so fortunate to have the leadership of Gary Nallenweg and Jim Goetz. We have some big shoes to fill. Tonight, I’m proud to announce we have found exceptional replacements,” Martinson began. “We can say we’re hiring athletic directors, but that wasn’t the goal. Our goal was to hire leaders. I believe we have found that in these two gentlemen,” he said.

Martinson said Hamstra comes with a wealth of knowledge to replace Nallenweg as athletic director. Hamstra previously worked as an athletic director, assistant athletic director, and assistant principal at Covenant Christian School in Demotte, Munster High School, and Kankakee Valley High School. For the last three years, Hamstra has been the assistant athletic director at Warsaw Community High School. He’s married and has four children.

Hamstra said he knows he has big shoes to fill, but he’s excited to start and thankful for the opportunity. “We’re extremely honored and extremely humbled to be offered this position at a fantastic school corporation with a fantastic high school program,” he said.

Berry is being promoted from within Duneland, where he has taught math and coached various sports at CHS for 14 years, 10 of which he was the math department chair. Martinson said Berry was a head coach at Logansport schools before coming to CHS in 2006. “Our place was changed when he came in. He’s done incredible things for our students,” Martinson said. Berry is married and has two children.

Berry thanked the board and said he looks forward to working with Hamstra. He noted Duneland has fantastic student athletes and thanked the community for its support along the way.

CHS Athletics had 55 IHSAA team and individual state champions, eight IHSAA Mental Attitude winners and 12 DAC All-Sport Trophies under Goetz and Nallenweg, according to a Duneland Schools release.

“Jeff and Tommy will make a great team,” Nallenweg said. “They are both committed to continuing the excellent tradition that has been established at Chesterton High School. Both are proven leaders. CHS Athletics is in good hands.”

Superintendent Dr. Chip Pettit took a moment at the end of the meeting to welcome Hamstra and Berry to their new positions and thank the team that hired them. “The prospect of the entire athletic office turning over is especially daunting,” he said, “so I also want to thank Jim, Gary and Vicki for their willingness to help Jeff and Tommy make a smooth transition.”

The School Board made the following additional personnel moves last night:

-Christopher Williams and Alexi Vander Vinne were appointed custodians for DSC.

-Russ Hardsock and Olivia Miles were appointed to Soccer Club at Yost Elementary.

-Tana Bamber was appointed to Running Club at Jackson Elementary.

-Tina Clindaniel and Tegan Powers were appointed to American Sign Language at CMS.

-Vivian Danyelle was appointed to Key Club at CHS.

-Gretchen Shinn was appointed assistant girls tennis coach at CHS.
