The Chesterton High School Japanese Olympiad team recently competed in the Japanese Olympiad of Indiana competition at DePauw University in Greencastle, IN. The team won the state championship in the fourth-year division, was runner-up in the third-year division and narrowly missed the final round in second-year.

The CHS team has now won the Japan Bowl/Japanese Olympiad state championship 20 times, along with three national Japan Bowl championships and one national runner-up placing.

The Japanese Olympiad of Indiana is an academic competition for second, third and fourth-year students with categories including speaking, culture, kanji characters, proverbs, listening, geography, history, and onomatopoeic expressions.

The CHS fourth-year team of Josh Guzek, Nolan Poczekay and Camma Duhamell defeated Michigan City and Indianapolis North Central in the final round to win the state championship. It was the third consecutive championship for Guzek and the second for Poczekay. Jakob Kintzle was the team’s alternate.

In the third-year division, the team of Keilee Willer, Nate Kravitz and Jonathon Sumita finished as runner-up to North Central and ahead of Indiana Academy. Orion Bohren was the team’s alternate.

Will Shook and Sam Henderson turned in an excellent performance in the second-year division, missing the final round by just one question.
