Jackson Township residents: Apply now for School Board vacancy

The Duneland School Board is accepting letters of interest from individuals who would like to be considered to complete the remaining term for the Jackson Township seat, following the recent resignation of Jackson Twp. Board member Kristin Kroeger.

For consideration, applicants must meet the following criteria:

--Currently reside within the Duneland School district for at least one (1) year and must reside in Jackson Township.

--Be a registered voter; and have been a registered voter for at least three (3) years.

--Be a high school graduate or have received a (i) high school equivalency certificate; or (ii) state general educational development (GED) diploma.

--Be age 21 or older

--Not hold any other elective or appointive office at the time of appointment to the School Board; or have a pecuniary interest in any contract with the school corporation or its governing body, as prohibited by law.

Interested candidates must submit a letter of interest and complete a questionnaire and petition of nomination/consent for school board office form (CAN-34), along with a list of qualifications by Jan. 31.

Candidates will be interviewed at a public Board meeting Feb. 4. The new Board member will be appointed and sworn in at a special meeting Feb. 6.

Next Term

Applicants seeking to finish Kroeger’s term are applying only to complete the current term, which expires this year.

A new Jackson representative will be voted onto the School Board in the 2020 general election on Tuesday, Nov. 3.

Candidates for school board hoping to be elected for the next term can begin filing Wednesday, July 22 and must file by noon Friday, Aug. 21. They must file the CAN-34, in addition to the CAN-12, statement of economic interests for local and school board offices. The petition of nomination must be signed by at least 10 registered voters.

Citizens who are otherwise eligible, but are currently serving actively in the military or who work for the Duneland School Corporation as teachers or noncertified employees, cannot run for School Board.
