GARY, Ind. (AP) — School district officials in Gary are expecting to cancel
the contracts of about 370 teachers as they prepare for an expected 19
percent drop in state funding for next school year.
The district’s School Board voted Tuesday to cancel contracts for 333
teachers, with those for 40 other teachers to be canceled later.
The Post-Tribune reports that the actual number of layoffs won’t be
determined until the district knows how much its current enrollment of about
11,000 students changes this fall. State records show the district has 720
teachers.
Gary Teachers Union President Carlos Tolliver argued that administrators
haven’t provided financial information to justify such a large layoff.
Board member Barbara Leek says the district hasn’t cut positions in the past
three years as enrollment has continued declining.
