The Indiana Department of Education (DOE) today released scores for the 2018 ISTEP+ tests Indiana students took in spring--and the last round of ISTEP+ testing at the elementary level before a new system takes hold.

The DOE reports that performance remained stable across content areas in grades 3-8, with slight increases in grade 8 English/Language Arts and grade 3 Mathematics.

This pattern generally holds true for Dunelandís third graders. All Duneland elementary schools improved upon their math section scores compared to last year with the exception of Yost, where the number of students passing fell from 74.0% to 68.7% this year.

Dunelandís eighth graders also didnít follow the stateís lead. The number of students earning passing English scores at Chesterton Middle School fell slightly from 69.8% to 68.6% compared to last year.

Of the nine Duneland schools, Jackson Elementary had the highest rate of students passing both Math and English with 76.7%. Last year, Liberty Intermediate was near the bottom, but this year it is second to best with 69.0% of students passing both. CHS is at the bottom again, with 46.4% of students passing both.

Porter County Schools faring better than Duneland in overall percentage of students passing were Union Township Schools, with 72.6%, Valparaiso Schools, with 70.7%, and East Porter County School Corporation with 67.6% compared to Dunelandís 60.8%.

Duneland generally performed better than the statewide averages--which were 64.1% passing English, 58.3% passing math, and 50.7% passing both. Dunelandís best performances were third graders at Jackson and Yost, who passed the English portion of the test at a rate of 94.8% and 90.4% respectively.

Saint Patrick and Discovery Charter School

Discovery Charter School surpassed Duneland as well, with 83.6% of students passing English and 76.3% of students passing Math, and 72.0% passing both.

Saint Patrick School on North Calumet Road in Chesterton leapt forward to increase its overall scores from 92.0% passing both in 2017 to 98.0% passing both this year--second only to one small, non-public school in the state that saw 100.0% of its students pass both tests in every grade.

100.0% of Saint Patrick students in every grade passed both tests--except in grade 5, where 88.0% passed English, 100.0% passed math, and 88.0% passed both.

ILEARN to replace ISTEP

As the DOE announced last year, grades 3-8 will no longer take the ISTEP+ beginning with the 2018-2019 school year. Instead, they will take the new ILEARN assessment.

ďILEARN assesses the same Indiana Academic Standards as ISTEP+, but educators reframed content priorities and item presentation to ensure each item solicits evidence of proficiency based on the Indiana Academic Standards,Ē the DOE said. Development of the ILEARN assessment began last September.

ISTEP+ is not totally gone--the ISTEP+ for grade 10 will remain the ďaccountability assessmentĒ measuring student preparedness through the 2022 cohort, until the transition to the new graduation pathways the DOE announced earlier this year.
