At its meeting Monday night, the Duneland School Board opted to appoint Joshua Huwig and David Alvarado as principals of Yost Elementary and Liberty Elementary, respectively.

Duneland Schools Superintendent Dr. Ginger Bolinger began by thanking the principal selection committee who helped choose the new appointees before Alvarado and Huwig introduced themselves. She said the committee spent hours reviewing applications and conducting interviews, and added “Parents, teachers, and admin came together to find the best principals for our school corporation.”

Both Huwig and Alvarado thanked the board and the committee members and said they can’t wait to begin working hard for Duneland. Alvarado, who brought his family to the meeting, said, “Being a father of four, I have a real passion for elementary school.”

The Board was also introduced to four new teachers who will start this coming school year. Samantha Leja, a resident of Chesterton who went to school at Liberty Elementary herself, will begin teaching third grade there. Taylor Thompson, a resident of Valparaiso who has studied abroad in Italy and completed a long-term sub position at Jackson Elementary, will begin teaching fourth grade at Liberty Elementary. Diane Schmiegel will begin teaching fifth grade at Westchester Intermediate. Brian Grenier was appointed the new strings/orchestra teacher at CHS. Grenier, who comes to Duneland from the Hobart school system, where he founded an orchestra program, said he is thrilled and honored to start work in Duneland. “I’m looking forward to exerting every power I have in the service of the students and the school community.”
