Duneland School Board candidate filing nears
In less than two weeks, the Indiana Election Division will allow individuals
to start filing petitions of nomination for school boards in the 2012
From Wednesday, July 25, to Noon, Friday, Aug. 24, candidates for the
Duneland School Board will turn their petitions in to the Porter County
Voters Registration office, located at the Porter County Administration
Center, 155 Indiana Ave., Valparaiso, Room 105.
The petition forms, or Indiana CAN-34 documents, can be found and printed
from the Indiana Election Division’s website, www.in.gov/sos/elections,
under Candidate Information. They can also be picked up at the voters
Two Duneland School Board seats will be voted on November 6: one at-large
seat (currently held by Janice Custer) and the Jackson Township seat
(currently held by Nick Jurasevich).
Candidates for the at-large seat must reside anywhere within the Duneland
School District. Candiates for the Jackson Township seat must live in the
township. Each candidate must confirm their residencies with the voters
registration office. They also must be a registered voter.
In order to be accepted, petition forms need at least 10 signatures from
registered voters living inside the boundaries of the school district.
All school board races — including for township seats — are voted on by all
registered voters living within the school district.
School board candidates for the 2012 General Election are encouraged to
attend one of the 10 candidate forums hosted by the Indiana School Boards
These forums are designed to inform new candidates and incumbents running
for re-election about school board service. Topics to be discussed include
the roles and responsibilities of a school board member, ethics, and legal
responsibilities, such as complying with the Open Door Law. There is time
allotted for questions from the audience.
Registering for the forums can be done online www.isba-ind.org/meetings/CandidateForumReg.htm.
Cost is $35 and each candidate will receive a school board candidate’s kit,
which contains valuable information on the financial, legal, and ethical
aspects of serving on a school board.
All candidate forums will be held in their respective venues from 6:30 to 9
