Dirk Baer honored by Indiana Library Federation

Retired Duneland Schools Superintendent Dr. Dirk Baer will be honored with the Sena Kautz (Media Center Service) Merit Award by the Indiana Library Federation.

This award honors and recognizes a non-librarian professional in the education field for his or her exceptional contributions which strengthen library services in a school, community, or across the state.

First as principal at Chesterton High School, then as assistant superintendent, now recently retired superintendent, Dr. Baer worked tirelessly as an advocate for quality education and library service for students in the Duneland School Corporation. He communicated to the school board, the community at-large and others about the relevance and contributions of school libraries and certified librarians.

Dr. Baer was instrumental in working on a referendum which increased funding for education in the Duneland School Corporation, and he advocated to fund licensed school librarians even when severe budget cuts were on the table.

In large part, Dr. Baer is to thank for the school library at Duneland receiving the highest score when the AdvancEd accreditation team came to Chesterton for the school’s accreditation review.

Coincidentally, this award was named to honor Ms. Sena Kautz, who was a school librarian for the Duneland School Corporation, several years ago.

For information about tickets to the banquet, contact Susan Akers, executive director of the ILF, at 317-257-2040, ext. 101.
