The Chesterton High School Trojan Guard Marching Band competed in the Indiana State School Music Association (ISSMA) Scholastic Class A Preliminary competition, hosted at Homestead High School, in Ft. Wayne, Indiana, this past Saturday. This event marks the first level of statewide competition for the Scholastic A and B Class bands, with two additional competitions taking place simultaneously at central and southern locations around Indiana.

While the predicted thunderstorms held off throughout most of the day, the Trojan Guard was met with 30+ mile-per-hour winds during their performance which blew over the group’s backdrops, removed helmets from the student’s heads, and caused the Color Guard to water down their equipment work by avoiding tosses that could be dangerous in the high winds. Despite the weather conditions, the band was able to put in a performance that numerically earned them a “Gold” division rating, and the opportunity to advance to the ISSMA Scholastic Finals held at Lawrence Central High School in Indianapolis on October 21, at 5:56 pm. EST (4:56 CST).

All Indiana bands are judged by a panel of six national caliber judges in the areas of Individual Music Performance, Ensemble Music Performance, Music Effect, Individual Visual Performance, Ensemble Visual Performance, and Overall Visual Effect. This year, 17 Scholastic “A” bands from across the state have earned composite scores high enough to qualify for a Superior, “Gold” division rating and advancement to the State Finals competition on October 21.

The champion bands from both the “A” and “B” classes will then perform in exhibition at the Open Class State Finals in Lucas Oil Stadium on Saturday, November 4. Immediately following their performances, the two groups will be recognized with an award ceremony honoring their achievements as the ISSMA 2017 Scholastic Class State Champions.

This year’s Trojan Guard 2017 competitive show theme revolves around the exhilaration and triumphs of mountain climbing entitled, “Bridges to the Gods.” The production consists of a four-movement musical score that includes Mvmt. I - “The First Climb;” Mvmt. II-- “Rest at High Camp;” Mvmt. III - “Cornice, Cravasse, and Avalanche;” and Mvmt. IV- “To the Summit!”
