CHS speech and debaters making strong showing at Nationals

Back to Front Page

The second day of speech and debate nationals lasted over twelve hours as the CHS students completed the preliminary rounds and waited to see if their numbers would appear on the break lists.

CHS had a fantastic showing. Tom Geairn in Lincoln Douglas Debate broke to rounds seven and eight; won one and lost one and qualified to continue in round nine on Wednesday morning.

In Public Forum debate Tyler Fabbri and Mike Hadley broke to rounds seven and eight; won both; and will continue on to rounds nine and ten. Riley Golden and Kurtis Kolb also broke to eliminations but lost both rounds seven and eight.

Kathleen O’Keefe competed in congressional debate and after two days of legislative debate broke to the semifinals which will take place all day Wednesday.

In speech events Samantha Kattalia, (Drama) Melissa Penfold, (Oratory) and Zach Stemer (Humor) all broke to rounds seven and eight but will shift to supplementary events on Wednesday.

The tournament has significantly grown in size. All of the events started with 220 to 240 competitors breaking down to the top 60 for eliminations. This is the best showing by CHS in a number of years.
