INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indiana students will soon take statewide tests in the
spring instead of the fall.
Governor Mitch Daniels says spring ISTEP exams will eliminate last-minute
cramming and could allow districts to start school closer to Labor Day.
Spring exam supporters say it makes sense to test students after a full year
of learning. Opponents say fall tests help with remediation throughout the
school year.
The state Board of Education recently worked out an agreement with testing
companies to provide the exams at a lower cost than spring testing. The board
will enter into the agreement soon.
Next year, students will take ISTEP exams in the fall and spring to meet
federal rules. After that, students will only take spring tests.
