People from all over Northwest Indiana celebrate the beginning of the holiday season each year at the Porter County Parks & Recreation’s Winter Lights festival. This year, Winter Lights will be held Saturday, Nov. 23. at Sunset Hill Farm County Park in Valparaiso.

The holiday festival offers a variety of activities, including crafts, singing carols and decorating cookies, along with the chance for children to get their photos taken with Santa by the Duneland Photography Club.

Winter Lights also features the only winter fireworks show in the Northwest Indiana region.

The festival will be held from 3 to 8 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 23. Winter Lights is the kickoff for the seasonal holiday light show at Sunset Hill.

“Guests can expect a family-friendly event with crafts, food, holiday cheer and of course, the only winter time fireworks display,” said Walter Lenckos, Superintendent of Porter County Parks & Recreation. “My favorite part of the festival is the look on kids’ faces when they see the light displays up close for the first time or get to meet Santa.”

The lights display around the park will stay up through Jan. 1. Between Nov. 23 and Jan. 1, the lights display will go on every night from dusk to around 10 p.m. After the Winter Lights festival on Nov. 23, people are welcome to drive through the lights display when it is on in the evenings.

“The event provides the community a way to kick off the holiday season with friends and loved ones. It has become a tradition for many families and it creates memories that remind us all to be proud of our community,” Lenckos said.

Musical performances

and Toys for Tots

Along with different family-friendly activities, there will also be hot chocolate, s’mores and other food available. The South Shore Brass Band and the Jingle Tones will both have performances at Winter Lights. Anyone who attends the festival is also welcome to bring donations for Toys for Tots collection.
