Vern Schrader celebrated his 97th birthday Thursday, Sept. 3, 2020. Friends and family formed a parade of vehicles, led by the Chesterton Fire Department, in a festive, but safe, gathering to wish him a happy birthday.

Vern was born in Porter, Indiana, on Sept. 3, 1923, and is a life-long resident of Chesterton. He graduated from Chesterton High School in 1941 and served in the U.S. Army for three years, serving in several countries and receiving an honorable discharge. He built his home, at 1818 Porter Ave., in the 1950s and lived there until 2016.

Vern was a member of the Augsburg Lutheran Church for many years, where he served as treasurer for over 10 years. He was a Scout leader in the 60s and 70s and received the Beaver and Lamb award. Vern was a wood carver and editor of Chips & Chat woodcarving newsletter. He is also a writer, and has authored an autobiography, a book of jokes, a children’s book and a non-fiction tome on wood carving chess sets.

Vern was a member of the Chesterton-Porter Rotary Club and served as President. He worked at U.S. Steel in accounting and served as Financial Officer of the United Way until his retirement.

Vern was married to Anne Sipa Schrader from 1948-1997, and Ruth Young Schrader from 1997-2012. Both preceded him. His faithful, loving companion, Renie Williamson, has been by his side since 2012.

Vern loves his cat and still spends time typing stories on the computer.

Rev. Tim Wanless, of CrossPointe Christian Church, which Vern now attends, says he’s “a source of inspiration” to many at the church.
