Two new C19 deaths in county; more than half of all cases in the younger age groups

The Porter County Health Department was reporting this morning two additional deaths from COVID-19 in the county.

Both were Portage Township residents: one was in the 50-59 demographic; the other in the 90-and-over.

To date 10 Porter County residents have died of COVID-19. Of the previous eight, four were Dunelanders: three from Westchester Township, two in the 80-89 demographic, one in the 50-59; and a Liberty Township resident in the 80-89. Three were also Portage Township residents: one in the 70-79 and two in the 50-59. One was a Center Township resident in the 70-79.

Six of the 10 victims were men. Four were women.

The Health Department also reported this morning five new cases of COVID-19 over the last 24 hours, to bring the total in the county to 290, up from 285 on Tuesday.

Those five new cases represent a modest 1.8 percent increase over the last 24 hours.

Thirteen patients are currently hospitalized, compared to 14 on Tuesday; while 170 have recovered, the same number as on Tuesday.

Total active cases in Porter County, after subtracting recoveries and deaths: 110, compared to 107 on Tuesday.

Although the 10 deaths to date have all been in the older demographics--50-59 and above--slightly more than half of all 290 confirmed COVID-19 cases in Porter are in the younger demographics: 154 of them, or 53 percent. Of those, seven cases are in the 0-19 demographic; 40 in the 20-29; 55 in the 30-39; and 52 in the 40-49.

Total COVID-19 tests conducted in Porter County as of Tuesday, according to the Indiana State Department of Health: 2,028, up from 1,986, an increase of 2.1 percent over the previous 24 hours.

Duneland cases by township:

-- Westchester: 25 cases (24 on Tuesday), three deaths (three), two hospitalizations (two), 14 recoveries (14). Eight active cases.

-- Liberty: 14 cases (12 on Tuesday), one death (one), no hospitalizations (none), nine recoveries (nine). Four active cases.

-- Jackson: one case, one recovery. No active cases.

-- Pine: one case, one recovery. No active cases.

Other hard hit townships:

-- Portage Township: 124 cases (121 on Tuesday), five deaths (three), five hospitalizations (six), and 77 recoveries (77).

-- Center: 44 cases, one death, four hospitalizations, and 29 recoveries (unchanged from Tuesday).

-- Washington: 43 cases, one hospitalization, and 14 recoveries (unchanged from Tuesday). These 42 cases include the 40 patients at Porter County Jail.

-- Union: 16 cases, one hospitalization, and 11 recoveries (unchanged from Tuesday)
