Two more C19 deaths in Porter County; hospitalizations climbing

Two more Porter County residents have succumbed to COVID-19, the Porter County Health Department (PCHD) reported on Sunday.

One was a Liberty Township resident; the other, a Center Township resident. One was in the 60-69 demographic; the other, in the 80-89. One was a resident of a long-term care facility (LTCF).

To date, 65 Porter County residents have died of COVID-19. Thirteen of them were Dunelanders: eight Westchester Township residents and five Liberty Township. Twenty-three were Portage Township residents; 26 Center Township; and three Union Township.  Deaths by demographic: three in the 40-49; eight in the 50-59; 11 in the 60-69; 14 in the 70-79; 15 in the 80-89; and 14 in the 90-and-over.

In the nine days since Friday, Oct. 30, COVID-19 claimed the lives of nine Porter County residents.

Hospitalizations

Meanwhile, hospitalizations continued to rise over the 72-hour period Friday-Sunday: from 26 on Friday (23 on Thursday), to 29 on Saturday, to 31 on Sunday.

Sunday's 31 hospitalizations are the most on any given day of the pandemic in Porter County, exceeding the previous high of 29 reported on Tuesday, Nov. 3.

Prior to Nov. 3, no more than 28 patients had ever been hospitalized at one time: on May 20, more than five months ago.

Of Sunday's 31 hospitalizations, 10 were nursing home residents.

New Cases

Over the 72-hour period Friday-Sunday, PCHD reported 386 new COVID-19 cases, to bring the total so far to 4,900.

PCHD reported 155 new cases on Friday; 139 on Saturday; and 92 on Sunday.

Of those 386 new cases, 236--or 61 percent--were in the younger demographics: 46 in the 0-20 (683 total); 73 in the 20-29 (883 total); 55 in the 30-39 (767 total); and 62 in the 40-49 (655 total).

The remaining 150 cases--or 39 percent--were in the older demographics: 60 in the 50-59 (790 total); 47 in the 60-69 (436 total); 22 in the 70-79 (270 total); 14 in the 80-89 (143 total); and seven in the 90-and-over (73 total).

LTCFs

Of the 386 new cases reported between Friday and Sunday, 25 were in long-term care facilities, to bring the total so far to 251, up from 226 on Thursday.

Of those 251 cases, 10 are currently hospitalized,  up from seven on Thursday; 98 have recovered, unchanged from Thursday; and 42 have died,  up from 41 on Thursday.

Right now there are 111 active COVID-19 cases in Porter County nursing homes, up from 87 on Thursday.

Over the first six months of the pandemic--from March 17, when PCHD first started tracking COVID-19 numbers, to Oct. 16--a total of 119 cases was reported by LTCFs. In the 23 days since, that number has grown by fully 132 new cases, or 111 percent.

Active Cases

PCHD reported 3,099 recoveries on Sunday, unchanged from Thursday.

Total active cases in Porter County, after subtracting the 3,099 recoveries and 63 deaths: 1,736, up from 1,352 on Thursday

Other Indicators

PCHD  recently introduced other indicators on its COVID-19 dashboard: a seven-day rolling average of new cases per 100,000 residents; and a seven-day rolling average of the unique-individual positivity rate.

-- New cases per 100,000 residents as of Sunday: 549 (484 on Thursday; 342 on Sunday, Nov. 1).

-- Unique-individual positivity rate as of Oct. 31: 20.7 percent (20.7 percent on Oct. 30; 19.9 percent on Oct. 24).  Note: the positivity rate lags up to eight days due to Indiana State Department of Health reporting methods.

Duneland Cases by Township as of Sunday

-- Westchester: 598 cases (532 on Thursday). Active cases: 208 (142 on Thursday).

-- Liberty: 314 cases (293 on Thursday). Active cases: 111 (90 on Thursday).

-- Jackson: 84 cases (77 on Thursday). Active cases: 22 (16 on Thursday).

-- Pine: 21 cases (18 on Thursday). Active cases: eight (five on Thursday).

Other Townships as of Sunday

-- Portage: 1,546 cases (1,438 on Thursday). Active cases: 466 (359 on Thursday).

-- Center: 1,403 (1,297 on Thursday). Active cases: 579 (476 on Thursday).

-- Washington: 171  cases (167 on Thursday). Active cases: 40 (36 on Thursday).

-- Union: 290 cases (255 on Thursday). Active cases: 119 (84 on Thursday).
