Two Dunelanders die of COVID19; recoveries rise sharply

The Porter County Health Department was reporting this morning two new deaths from COVID-19, bringing the total in the county to five.

Both victims were Dunelanders, a Westchester Township resident and a Liberty Township resident, both in the 80-89 demographic.

Two of the previous three deaths were in the 50-59 demographic; both were residents of Portage Township. The other death was that of a Center Township man in the 70-79 demographic.

The Health Department is not identifying victims or how it is believed they caught the virus.

Only one new case of COVID-19 has been diagnosed in Porter County since Tuesday, bringing the total number of cases to 199 (198 on Tuesday).

Eleven patients are currently hospitalized (12 on Tuesday); while recoveries rose sharply to 87 (69).

Total active cases in Porter County today, after subtracting recoveries and deaths: 107 (126 on Tuesday).

Total COVID-19 tests conducted in Porter County as of Tuesday, according to the Indiana State Department of Health: 1,304 (1,216 on Monday).

Duneland cases by township:

-- Westchester: 14 cases (14 on Tuesday), one death (none), two hospitalizations (three), nine recoveries (six). Four active cases.

-- Liberty: 12 cases (12 on Tuesday), one death (none), no hospitalizations (one), seven recoveries (five). Four active cases.

-- Jackson: one case, no hospitalization. One active case.

-- Pine: one case, no hospitalization. One active case.

The hardest hit townships:

-- Portage Township: 81 cases (81 on Tuesday), two deaths (two), six hospitalizations (5), and 40 recoveries (28).

-- Washington, 37 cases (37 on Tuesday), no hospitalizations (zero), and one recovery (one). These 37 cases include the 33 patients at Porter County Jail.

-- Center: 28 cases (28 on Tuesday), one death (one), three hospitalizations (three), and 15 recoveries (14).
