Tonight's fireworks postponed to Friday

Tonight’s scheduled Fireworks on the Lakefront event has been postponed to Friday, July 5, the Duneland Chamber of Commerce said just before deadline today.

High waves forecast for this evening prompted the postponement.

“All festivities will continue as planned” on Friday, including fresh-food merchants and live music starting at 6 p.m., with bus transfers from Yost Middle School and Chesterton Middle School to Porter Beach between 5 and 7:30 p.m. The fireworks are set to commence at 9:15 p.m.

“Our fireworks for this event are set off from a barge that sits 300 feet from shore,” Chamber Executive Director Heather Ennis said. “If there are swells over four feet high at that location, there is a real risk of the barge capsizing. While we regret having to postpone the event, the safety of those on the barge must come first. Tonight, there’s a strong prediction of four-to seven-foot swells, so we had to make the call to postpone until our rain-date, which is this Friday, July 5.”
