Three new cases in local schools

The Duneland School Corporation (DSC) is reporting the first case of COVID-19 at Brummitt Elementary School.

The Brummitt student tested positive on Friday morning. Eight persons have been identified as close contacts of the student and will be quarantined for 14 days, DSC said.

Also: A Chesterton High School student tested positive on Sunday morning and another CHS student tested positive this morning.

Three persons have been identified as close contacts with the CHS student who tested positive on Sunday and will be quarantined. The student in question was last in the school building on Monday, Oct. 12.

No word at deadline today of any close contacts with the CHS student who tested positive this morning. This student was last in the school building on Tuesday, Oct. 13.

"Please be aware that privacy laws, including HIPAA and FERPA, prevent us from sharing further information regarding students and staff," DSC said.

According to the Chesterton Tribune's records, 31 DSC in-person students or staffers have tested positive since classes began:

-- Chesterton High School: 13 students.

-- Chesterton Middle School: four students.

-- Westchester Intermediate School: two students; one staffer.

-- Liberty Elementary: one student.

-- Liberty Intermediate: three staffers.

-- Yost Elementary: two students; one staffer.

-- Bailly Elementary: two students.

-- Jackson Elementary: one student.

-- Brummitt Elementary: one student.
