Three more virus deaths in Porter County; single day new case record shattered

Three more Porter County residents have succumbed to COVID-19, the Porter County Health Department (PCHD) reported after deadline on Thursday, at the end of a 24-period which shattered the one-day record for new cases.

One of the victims was in the 40-49 demographic, the youngest so far to die of COVID-19 in Porter County. One was in the 50-59; the third in the 80-89.

Two of the victims were living in a long-term care facility. One victim was a Porter Township resident; one a Portage Township resident; and one a Center Township resident.

To date, 53 Porter County residents have died of COVID-19. Eleven of them were Dunelanders: nine Westchester Township residents and two Liberty Township. Twenty-one were Portage Township residents; 19 Center Township; one Union Township; and one Porter Township.

Meanwhile, one day after PCHD reported 30 new COVID-19 cases in long-term care facilities (LTCFs), it reported another 10 on Thursday, to bring the total to 165, up from 155 on Wednesday.

One of those LTCF patients was hospitalized, unchanged from Wednesday. Of those 165 LTCF cases, 88 have recovered and 33 have died. As of today, there were 44 active cases in Porter County LTCFs.

Meanwhile, PCHD was reporting on Thursday a total of 98 new COVID-19 cases over the previous 24 hours, including the 10 in LTCFs (58 new cases on Wednesday, to bring the countywide total to 3,111, up 3,013 on Wednesday.

Those 98 new cases represent a one-day record, breaking the old record of 58 set only the day before, on Wednesday.

Of those 98 new cases, 39 percent were diagnosed in the older demographics: 15 were reported in the 50-59 (487 total); nine in the 60-69 (322 total); eight in the 70-79 (179 total); three in the 80-89 (93 total); and five in the 90-and-over (48 total).

Meanwhile, 61 percent were reported in the younger demographics: 14 the 0-19 (452 total); 11 in the 20-29 (570); 23 in the 30-39 (499 total); and 14 in the 40-49 (465 total)

As of Thursday, four patients were hospitalized, down from seven on Wednesday. After subtracting 2,465 recoveries and 53 deaths, active COVID-19 cases in Porter County totaled 593, up from 497 on Wednesday.

Other Indicators

PCHD recently introduced other indicators on its COVID-19 dashboard: a seven-day rolling average of new cases per 100,000 residents; and a seven-day rolling average unique-individual positivity rate.

-- New cases per 100,000 residents as of Thursday: 223 (190 on Wednesday): the highest per-100,000 average since the pandemic began.

-- Unique-individual positivity rate as of Oct. 14: 11.3 percent (11.6 percent on Oct. 13). Note: the positivity rate lags up to eight days due to Indiana State Department of Health reporting methods.

Duneland Cases by Township:

-- Westchester: 379 cases (368 on Wednesday). Seventy-five active cases.

-- Liberty: 198 cases (185 on Wednesday). Forty-two active cases.

-- Jackson: 60 cases (57 on Wednesday). Ten active cases.

-- Pine: 12 cases (unchanged from Wednesday. No active cases.

Other Townships:

-- Portage: 1,047 cases (1,009). 184 active cases.

-- Center: 836 cases (816 on Wednesday). 160 active cases.

-- Washington: 127 cases (124 on Wednesday). Twenty-four active cases. Washington Township's total includes Porter County Jail inmates.

-- Union: 170 cases (166 on Wednesday). Thirty-two active cases.
