For those who have
wondered what the inside of an ambulance looks like, or wanted to test their
aim with a real fire hose, or dunk a police officer into cold water, the
chance is here. The seventh annual Summer Safety Fest will be held this
Friday, June 8, from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m., at Porter's Hawthorne Park, 500
Ackerman Drive.
This free event is
designed for all ages, and will feature interactive activities and
demonstrations led by Porter Police, Porter Fire Search & Rescue, Burns
Harbor Fire Department, the National Park Service, and several other area
law enforcement and emergency agencies. Enjoy K9 demonstrations, watch a
'jaws of life' car extrication, or learn about power line safety from
Kankakee Valley REMC.
Now in its seventh
year, Summer Safety Fest continues to grow with new activities and partners
including a helicopter landing in the park. Activities and informational
booths this year include tours of ambulances and emergency response
vehicles, free face painting, free popcorn, an electrical safety
demonstration trailer, and much more.
Dinner or snacks
can be purchased on-site from one of the food vendors.
After Safety Fest,
stay in the park for the first outdoor concert and film of year in the
Westchester Public Library's Bandstand Concert and Family Film Series.
The Valparaiso
University-Community Band will present an outdoor concert at the park's East
Shelter, beginning at 7:00 p.m., followed by a showing of the Disney movie
"Beauty & The Beast" on a huge outdoor screen, beginning at dusk. In the
event of inclement weather the concert and film will take place inside the
Community Center at Hawthorne Park.
