The second annual
Stop, Drop, and Run 5K will take place this Sunday, July 24, beginning at
7:30 a.m., at Hawthorne Park. Proceeds will benefit the Porter Volunteer
Fire Department.
Brian Mulholland,
firefighter with the Porter Volunteer Fire Department and race director,
said the goal is to raise $5,000 for much needed equipment including new
hand tools, replacement dive equipment, and new training aids.
“We had just over
100 runners last year for our inaugural event and this year we are hoping to
double that number,” Mulholland said.
The race starts at
8 a.m. at Hawthorne Park and will lead runners through the downtown streets
of Porter, past the town’s fire station, onto bike trails as well as roads.
New to this year’s
event is the “Junior Firefighters’ Fun Run” for kids 9 and under. The free
kids’ race kicks off at 7:30 a.m., is free, and will feature the
accompaniment of volunteer firefighters during the half-mile run.
“A number of fire
fighters will be running in full bunker gear so runners can ‘run with a
firefighter’ and a police officers will join the race as well,” Mullholland
said.
Runners can sign up
on the Porter Volunteer Fire Department Facebook page, at the Porter
Volunteer Fire Department, or at runsignup.com. Cost is $25 prior to race
day or $30 at the event.
