Chesterton resident Judy Chaplin was posthumously presented with a 2015 Lieutenant Governorís Hoosier Hospitality Award on Friday in Indianapolis, the county tourism office said after deadline on Friday.

Chaplin, who died May 21, operated Shady Lawn Florist in Chesterton and served 11 years on the Board of Directors of Indiana Dunes Tourism (Porter County Convention, Recreation, and Visitor Commission). Indiana Dunes Tourism nominated Chaplin for the award, which is one of the highest honors someone in the travel, tourism and service industry can receive in Indiana.

In nominating Chaplin, Indiana Dunes Tourism noted that Chaplin provided such good service to her flower shop customers and to the community that the tourism staff decided to put her on the nomination card for its Recognition of Service Excellence (R.O.S.E.) Awards.

Indiana Dunes Tourism was planning to nominate Chaplin for a 2015 Hoosier Hospitality award and decided to proceed with the nomination after her death.

Indiana Dunes Tourism Executive Director Lorelei Weimer joined Chaplinís family in Indianapolis for the Hoosier Hospitality Awards ceremony. Lt. Governor Sue Ellspermann was joined by Mark Newman, executive director of the Indiana Office of Tourism Development (IOTD), in presenting the awards to Chaplin and others throughout the state who set the bar for service.

ďIím very happy Judy is being honored posthumously because she really did embody Hoosier Hospitality,Ē Weimer said.
