Spec. Andrew Roe from the 202nd Military Police Company will be one of two soldiers to receive the Soldiers Medal Monday.

Spec. Andrew Roe deployed to Kandahar, Afghanistan with the 202nd Military Police Company in December 2004 in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

On April 4, 2005, Roe saw a fire in the Kandahar International Airport building. He and another soldier ran to the scene to assist. Despite flames, smoke and falling debris they entered the building and found two local men in a room engulfed in flames. They carried the men to safety.

The 202nd Military Police Company returned to Fort Eustis on December 23, 2005. The unit is part of the 765th Transportation Battalion, 8th Transportation Brigade. The unit is assigned to the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command headquartered at Fort Monroe. The Soldiers of the 202nd Military Police Company conducted detainee operations in Afghanistan.

The Soldier’s Medal is awarded to any person of the Armed Forces of the United States or of a friendly foreign nation who, while serving in any capacity with the Army of the United States, distinguished himself or herself by heroism not involving actual conflict with an enemy. The performance must have involved personal hazard or danger and the voluntary risk of life under conditions not involving conflict with an armed enemy.

Spec. Roe is the husband of Leslie Mahaffey Roe, a Chesterton High School graduate, who is also serving in the military.
