Sculptor wins Best of Show as 62nd CWC Art Show opens

The 2013 GFWC Chesterton Woman’s Club Art Show is underway and will run through June 24. This is the 62nd annual CWC Art Show in the Duneland community.

The theme for this year’s show is “Artful Visions” and is dedicated to the Chesterton Art Center in appreciation for the 44 years of support for the CWC Art Show.

There are 113 entries in this year’s show. Many artists entered two works. The art on exhibit runs the gamut from sculpture in various materials, to oil, acrylic and watercolor paintings, colored pencil, India ink, pastels, mixed media and intaglio prints.

The Best of Show award went to sculptor Ivan Chermel for his classical bust of Jane Walsh-Brown, titled “JWB Librarian.” There was a $400 prize for the Best of Show.

The First Award, the Roland V. Cline Memorial award sponsored by Luella Cline DeWulf, was given to Mary Campbell for her India ink drawing, “The Footpath.” This award came with a $350 cash prize.

The Second Award, sponsored by Horizon Club, went to Robert R. Williams for his pastel work, “Kate in Sweater,” earning a $200 prize.

Mary Ann Pals won the CWC Patron’s Award, a $200 prize, for her pastel “Tools of My Trade.”

Third awards, with a $150 prize, were awarded to Charles Capek for his pen & ink and charcoal work titled “The Carpenter,” and to Judith Rein for her watercolor, “Spanish Farm House.” These awards were sponsored by Edmonds & Evans Funeral Home and First State Bank of Porter.

Fourth Awards, with a $100 prize, were presented to Carl Olson, for his watercolor/gesso “Infinite Man;” Max Tims, for an ink pastel titled “Summer Breeze;” Mary Ann Gradisher for a mixed media piece titled “Love’s Warm Instant,” and Judy Crawford for her pastel “Her Summer Straw.” These awards were sponsored by Michael and Sue Harris, Suzanne Philbrick, Virginia Phillips and White-Love Funeral Home.

Merit Awards, $75 prizes sponsored by Tri Kappa Active Chapter and CWC Patrons, were given to J. William Looby for an oil titled “The Great Marsh,” and to John Mullin for a cherry sculpture “Tip Toe.”

Honorable Mention prizes, $50 awards, were given to Dawn Fetty for an acrylic & mixed media work titled “Creative Process;” Max Tims for his watercolor “Portrait Study;” and to Lindsay Sanbothe, for an acrylic on panel titled “Garden at Grant Park.” These awards were sponsored by Anton Insurance, the Chesterton Tribune and the Hiestand Law Office.

The GFWC CWC patrons are Doris Anderson, Georgianna Appel, Shirley Banary (In Memory of Esther Tarnow), Vickii Brock, Joan Costello, Janice M. Custer, Theresa and Jim Diffenbach, Becky and Bob Dunbar, Joan Fletcher, Jenny and Don Gaff, Ofelia Gonzalez, Clarice Gourley, Marge and Don Habel, Ann and Frank Howard, Dolores and Wally Iwan, Carolyn Kipper and Gretchen Loomis.

Cover artist for this year’s program was Wendy Marciniak, of Chesterton.

Judges were Roberta M. Feldman, Tom Torluemke and Mark Vander Vinne.
