Relay for Life of Duneland kicks off this weekend

Back To Front Page

Take part in not only a global movement, but a local movement to fight cancer, right here in the Duneland community by taking part in the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life of Duneland.

Relay For Life is the largest grassroots effort to fight cancer with more than 5,200 fundraising events around the world. This inspiring, family friendly event is planned for this Saturday and Sunday, June 28-29, from noon to 6 a.m. at Chesterton Middle School, 651 W. Morgan Avenue.

Relay For Life events are held overnight as individuals and teams camp out at a high school athletic track, park or other gathering area, with the goal of keeping at least one team member on the track or pathway at all times.

Teams do much of their fundraising prior to the event, but the track will be filled with teams fundraising by offering food, games, fun and commemorative items, and much more.

Relay brings together people from all walks of life to further the American Cancer Society’s efforts to save lives by helping people stay well, by helping them get well, by finding cures and by fighting back.

Relay For Life includes survivor and caregiver celebrations to honor and recognize those who have battled cancer, whether personally or alongside a loved one. The Survivor’s Victory Lap, where all the survivors take to the track in unison, will take place at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday.

The lap is preceded/followed by a celebratory reception/dinner at 5 p.m. The Luminaria Ceremony takes place after sundown, honoring the community’s cancer survivors and remembering those lost to the disease.

Participants circle a track that is surrounded with glowing luminaria that bear the names of those who have battled cancer. Luminaria will still be available at the Relay on Saturday.

The Fight Back Ceremony at 11 p.m. inspires Relay participants to make a personal pledge of action such as quitting smoking, getting recommended cancer screenings, or making other healthy lifestyle changes in order to fight back against the disease.

In addition to the event’s ceremonies that honor those who have battled cancer, there is an emphasis on educating the community about steps to can take to prevent cancer. Activities are planned to encourage leading an active lifestyle, maintaining a healthy weight and eating a plant-rich diet, all of which are shown to significantly reduce one’s risk for cancer with the potential to cut cancer deaths by one-third.

Funds raised at Relay For Life of Duneland enable the American Cancer Society to impact the lives of those touched by cancer within the community through programs like Road to Recovery, which provides free transportation to and from treatment for cancer patients; Reach to Recovery, a program that pairs breast cancer patients with trained survivors to offer support and advice; clinical trials matching service; and access to life-saving information at any hour day or night.
