Porter park department tells summer programs

The Town of Porter Park Department has announced several scheduled activities planned for this summer in partnership with area organizations.

Kids Summer Park Program

SESSION 1: June 4 to June 8 --The popular Kids Summer Park Program at Hawthorne Park will be back this year with a few fun changes. The program will run for four separate weeks this year. The first week of the program will run from June 4 to 8 and feature a science day, double dare day, and a walking field trip to Hageman Library.

SESSION 2: June 18 to June 22 --The popular program returns and will feature a mini-chef day, martial arts visit, and a walking field trip to Indian Springs Park for a day of fishing.

SESSION 3: June 25 to June 29 --Session 3 will feature an artful antics day, DIY drive-in day, and a walking field trip to the Porter Police Department.

SESSION 4: July 9 to July 13 --Session 4 will feature a life-sized game of “Life,” music in the park, and a walking field trip to the Porter Fire Department.

The program will begin at 9 a.m. each weekday, and end at 1 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to bring a sack lunch (nothing that needs preparation) to enjoy at lunchtime.

This program, supervised by a Summer Park Program Director and three adult assistants, is filled with activities, games, crafts, surprises, and walking field trips. The program is free to children ages six through 11. Children must have completed kindergarten. Pre-registration is required. Movies in the park

There will be two free Outdoor Movie and Concert Nights at the East shelter in Hawthorne Park this summer.

See the live-action Disney movie, “Beauty & the Beast” Friday, June 8 at 7 p.m. Prior to the film, there will be a free concert by the Valparaiso University Community Band.

See Disney’s “Coco” Friday, August 3 at 7 p.m. Prior to the film, there will be a free concert by the Mariachi Infantil Santa Maria.

Concerts begin at 7 p.m. at the shelter with the movie following at dusk. In the event of inclement weather, the concert and movie will be moved inside the Community Center at Hawthorne Park.

Free concert and movie nights are made possible through a partnership between the Westchester Public Library, the Chesterton-Porter Rotary Club, and the Town of Porter Park Department.

One-time events

Summer Safety Fest: Friday, June 8 from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The seventh annual Summer Safety Fest is back by popular demand! This free event is designed for all ages. Summer Safety Fest features interactive activities and demonstrations led by area law enforcement and public safety agencies. Enjoy K9 demonstrations, a “jaws of life” car extrication demonstration, or dunk a police officer in the dunk tank! Hot dog dinners will be available for purchase. Safety Fest is chaired by young Porter resident Eric Ailes, 16.

MS4 Kids Fishing Derby at Indian Springs Park: Wednesday, June 20, 8 a.m. to Noon.

Is your six to 12 year-old interested in learning how to fish, or wanting to show off existing skills? Get kids who love to fish signed up for the fourth annual MS4 Kids Fishing Derby at Indian Springs Park!

There will be guides on site available to provide instruction and assist throughout the event. There will be prizes for the biggest fish, games after the derby, and a hot dog lunch. All fishing equipment will be provided, and all participants must be accompanied by an adult. This free event is put on through a partnership of the Town of Chesterton Storm Water Utility, the Town of Porter Storm Water/MS4 Program, and the Town of Porter Park Department with support from Indiana DNR, the Northwest Indiana Steelheaders, and the Town of Porter Fire Department. Family 4th Fest: Tuesday July 4

Grab the family and head to Hawthorne Park this Fourth of July for the Annual Family 4th Fest. This free event kicks off when the DuneBIG 4th of July parade arrives at the park and continues with a Lions Club pancake breakfast. Activities throughout the day will include a turtle derby, brick toss contest, family fun games and contests, bounce houses, kiddy rides, food vendors, live music, karaoke, and a beer garden. The night is capped off by a fireworks show at dusk. The event is organized by Duneland Business Initiative Group, The Chesterton Lions Club, and the Town of Porter Park Department.
