Porter County reports two more C19 deaths

The Porter County Health Department was reporting this morning two more deaths from COVID-19 in the county, to bring the total so far to 17.

Both victims were Center Township residents: one in the 70-79 demographic, the other in the 90-and-over.

Center Township has experienced a surge in COVID-19 cases over the last week, with 91 reported today, compared to 60 on Monday, May 11: a spike of 52 percent over seven days. Also: more than half of the current hospitalizations for COVID-19 in the county, 15 of 28, are of Center Township residents.

Of the 17 Porter County residents who have died of COVID-19, five were Dunelanders: four Westchester Township residents and one Liberty Township resident.

Nine have been Portage Township residents; three, Center Township residents.

Nine of the victims were men; eight, women. Deaths by demographic: four 50-59; four 70-79; five 80-89; and four 90-and-over.

The Health Department was also reporting 23 new COVID-19 cases over the last 72 hours, bringing the total to 416, up from 393 on Friday. New cases by day: eight on Saturday; six on Sunday; nine today.

Twenty-eight patients are currently hospitalized (27 on Friday); while 240 have recovered (231).

Total active cases in Porter County, after subtracting recoveries and deaths: 159 (147 on Friday).

Total COVID-19 tests conducted in Porter County as of Sunday, according to the Indiana State Department of Health: 3,047, up from 2,487 on Friday, an increase of 23 percent over the previous 48 hours.

Duneland cases by township:

-- Westchester: 31 cases, three deaths, two hospitalizations, 18 recoveries (unchanged from Friday). Ten active cases.

-- Liberty: 21 cases (19 on Friday), one death (one), two hospitalizations (none), 12 recoveries (11). Eight active cases.

-- Jackson: one case, one recovery.

-- Pine: three cases, three recoveries.

Other hard hit townships:

-- Portage Township: 174 cases (169 on Friday), nine deaths (nine), six hospitalizations (six), and 81 recoveries (78).

-- Center: 60 cases (50 on Friday), one death (one), eight hospitalizations (eight), and 30 recoveries (29).

-- Washington: 47 cases (46 on Friday), no hospitalizations (none), and 39 recoveries (39). These 47 cases include 40 confirmed at the Porter County Jail.

-- Union: 16 cases (18 on Friday), two hospitalization (two), and 14 recoveries (14).
