Porter County Parks offers variety of activities for September

The Porter County Parks Department announces the following activities and programs for residents to enjoy during the month of September.

Sunset Hill Farm Programs (775 N. Meridian Rd., Liberty Twp.)

*  Youth Cross Country at Sunset Hill Campground: Wednesdays starting Aug. 30 to Oct. 18, from 5:45 to 6:45 p.m., boys and girls ages 4-12 of all abilities and skill levels are welcome to join the Porter County Parks Cross Country Team. This program will introduce children to the fun and satisfaction of running. Children will run with youngsters their own age and run age-appropriate distances. The course will take them up and down hills, over fields, and through Rogers Lakewood and Sunset Hill Farm County Parks. Runners will be competing against the Valpo Parks and Valpo YMCA teams. Meets are tentatively scheduled for Saturday mornings, Sept. 30 and Oct. 7, 14, and 21. Registration is open through Sept. 20, 2017. Cost for the program is $45.

*  Meet the Animals: Families can see the animals on the farm at the animal barn on Saturday, Sept. 2 and Friday, Sept. 8, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. This is a free program.

*  Nature Scavenger Hunt: Those who want to try their hunting skills can meet on Saturday, Sept. 2, and Friday, Sept. 8 in the parking lot of Sunset Hill Farm. The Nature Scavenger Hunt is free and takes place from 10:45 to 11:30 a.m.

*  Beginning/Intermediate Drawing for Adults: This program will be in Sunset Hill Farmís Program Center each Thursday of the month starting Sept. 7 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. The cost for the series is $45.

*  Cancer Nutrition with Purdue Extension Porter County: On Fridays, Sept. 8 and Sept. 15, from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m., in Sunset Hill Farmís Program Center, an educator with Purdue Extension will lead this informative class which will cover healthy lifestyle choices for preventing cancer and staying healthy after treatment. This is a free program.

*  Painting Techniques: This program will be in Sunset Hill Farmís Program Center each Monday of the month starting Sept. 11 from 2 to 4 p.m. The cost for the series is $60 and runs to Oct. 9.

*  Robotics with Sylvan Learning: This program will be in Sunset Hill Farmís Program Center each Tuesday of the month starting Sept. 12 from 5 to 7 p.m. The cost for the series is $80.

*  Coloring Circle for Adults: On Wednesdays, from Sept. 13 to Oct. 11, come out to the coloring circle for fun, socialization, and relaxation. Each session will be from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. The price is $20 for the series and $5 for each drop-in.

*  Young Artists: This program will be in Sunset Hill Farmís Program Center on Thursdays, Sept. 14 and Sept. 28 from 6 to 7:15 p.m. The cost for each project is $8.

*  Big and Little Art: This program will be in Sunset Hill Farmís Program Center on Wednesday, Sept. 20 from 10 to 10:45 a.m. The cost is $8.

*  Watercolor Painting: This program will be in Sunset Hill Farmís Program Center on Saturday, Sept. 30 from 1 to 4 p.m. The cost is $30.

Brincka Cross Gardens Programs (427 E. Furness Rd., Pine Twp.)

*  Dream Circle Share: On Saturday, Aug. 19, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., share and explore your dreams in a safe, non-judgmental setting. Take the time to consider the wisdom your dreams may offer. Cost for this program is $10.

*  Yoga at Brincka Cross House: This program will be on Sunday, Sept. 17, from 10 to 11 a.m. Cost is $10.

*  Brincka Cross Tour: On Sunday, Sept. 10, from 10 to 11 a.m., explore Porter Countyís hidden gem. Brincka Cross Gardens is a lush and unique park hidden away in the woods. Come learn about its history, explore the distinctive home, and tour the artfully designed gardens. This is a free program.

Parks On the Go

*  Acrylic Painting at Hebron Public Library: Create a step-by-step masterpiece on Tuesday, Sept. 5, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. All skill levels welcome. Cost is $10 and all supplies included.

*  Empower Me to be Clutter Free with Purdue Extension Porter County: This three-part series will take place Tuesdays Sept. 19, Oct. 17 and Nov. 21 at Hebron Public Library from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. There is no cost to participate.

*  Acrylic Painting at Valparaiso Public Library: Create a step-by-step masterpiece on Thursday, Sept. 28, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. All skill levels welcome. Cost is $10 and all supplies included.

*  Acrylic Painting at Kouts Public Library: Create a step-by-step masterpiece on Thursday, Sept. 14, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. All skill levels welcome. Cost is $10 and all supplies included.

*  Acrylic Painting at Valparaiso Public Library: Create a step-by-step masterpiece on Thursday, Sept. 28, from 2 to 4 p.m. or 6 to 8 p.m. The same project will be taught at each session. All skill levels welcome. Cost is $10 and all supplies included.

*  Coffee & Canvas at Hawthorne Park: Paint like the masters on Sunday, Sept. 10 from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. at Hawthorne Park in Porter, 500 Ackerman Dr. Cost is $30.
