Porter County parks offer activities to enjoy this spring

The Porter County Parks and Recreation Department lists its activities and programs available to residents for their wellness and enjoyment throughout the next few weeks.

*  Spring Out to Sunset Festival: Itís that time of year again for the launch of spring at Sunset Hill Farm County Park. Join in on Saturday, May 17 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for a day filled with outdoor fun and activities including a stunt dog show, music, an obstacle course, kite flying, yummy food, and more. No registration necessary. Cost is $5 per car.

*  Youth Track & Field: Boys and Girls (ages 4-12) of all skill levels are welcome to join the Porter County Parks track team. Each Thursday from June 5 to July 24 at 5:30 to 7 p.m. participants will have the opportunity to compete in 4 events (field and running) each meet. Children will run with youngsters their own age, with boys and girls in separate divisions. Porter County Parks will compete against the Valpo YMCA, Highland Parks Department, and the Valparaiso Parks Department. Meets are tentatively scheduled for the following Saturday mornings: June 28, July 12, 19 and 26. Cost for this program is $45.

*  Acrylic Painting: All skill levels are welcome to attend this art class on Tuesday, May 20, at the Hebron Public Library under the guidance of an experienced instructor. A painting surface will be provided. Cost is $10.

*  Hostas and Happiness sponsored by Porter Regional Hospital Senior Circle: On Wednesday, May 21, join the park naturalist from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. to learn about the 400 species of hostas (and other unique plants) that can be found there. This is a free program.

*  Gentle Yoga and Strength Training for Seniors: Sponsored by Porter Regional Hospital Senior Circle: Every Thursday until June 5 at the Hebron Public Library from 10:30 -11:30 a.m. this Gentle Yoga and Strength Training class, taught by a Yoga Fit Certified Instructor, will teach the basics of gentle yoga while sitting in a chair. The Parks Department will also incorporate the use of TheraBands for gentle strength training. Cost is $5 for each session or $30 for the entire series.

*  Meet the Animals: On Friday, May 23, families are invited to stop by Sunset Hill Farm from 10 to 11 a.m. to meet the animals and their caretakers. This is a free program.

*  Family Hikes: On Friday, May 23, come out and enjoy Sunset Hill Farm with the park naturalist from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. A new month will always bring a new topic for exploring and discussing from geology to history and beyond. This is a free program.

*  Boot Camp at Sunset-Sponsored by Porter Regional Hospital: Join a master level trainer at Sunset Hill for an invigorating hour long workout that is guaranteed to work your body from head to toe. Sessions will be on Saturdays from 7-8 a.m. from now to June 14. Open to men and women 18 years and older. Cost is $5 per session or $35 for the series.

*  Four-week Meditation Series: From each Friday on May 23 to June 13, join an instructor at Brincka-Cross Gardens from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. to learn the ins and outs of meditation, which will focus on both the mind and body. Participants must attend a Meditation Workshop before participating in the 4 week Meditation Series. Cost for the series is $35 or $10 per each session.

*  Year Round Run Club: On Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 to 9 a.m., join the Sunset Hill Run Club for a run to discover the beauty of Sunset Hill. The length of the run varies but will traverse grass, hills and woodland trails. This is a free program.

*  Womenís Walk Club at Sunset Hill Farm County Park-Sponsored by Porter Regional Hospital: Come to Sunset Hill for a walk on the challenging terrain of the park, every Tuesday and Thursday from 8-9 a.m. The walk will traverse grass, hills, and woodland trails. Must be 18 years or older. This is a free program.

*  Weekly Open Studio with Acrylics: Beginners will learn basic painting techniques from an experienced acrylic painter. Sessions will be on Thursdays from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Sunset Hill Farm. Experienced artists are also welcome to come and bring their own ideas for projects. No personal supplies needed.

*  Sunset Dog Walkers at Sunset Hill Farm County Park: Bring your four-legged friend on a leash for a walk on the trails at Sunset Hill Farm on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10-11 a.m. The walk will offer wellness information and encouragement for the dogs and their walkers. Must be 18 years or older. This is a free program.

*  Weekday Walk at Sunset Hill Farm County Park: Come to Sunset Hill for a walk on the challenging terrain of the park. The program continues Wednesdays at 6 p.m., until Oct. 29. The walk will traverse grass, hills, and woodland trails. Open to men and women 18 years or older. This is a free program.
