Porter County Park August programs improve on fitness and wellness

The Porter County Parks and Recreation Department is partnering with Porter Regional Hospital in hosting diverse health and wellness programs this month at Sunset Hill Farm County Park, located at the intersection of Meridian Road and U.S. 6 in Liberty Township.

The parks department also offers programs that focus on wellness of the mind and body at Brincka-Cross Gardens, located at 427 Furnessville Road in Pine Township.

Here is a look at the department’s programs open to the pubic in August. Senior Hikes and Fitness programs are sponsored by Porter Regional Hospital.

Senior Hike at Sunset Hill Farm -- For senior residents, learn what and how to eat the flora of Sunset Hill Farm while also learning to identify trees by leaf, location, bark and smell on a free hike this Wednesday, Aug. 7, from 3 to 4 p.m. This program, which teaches participants about tree identification and wild edibles, is free to residents.

Sunset Dog Walkers -- In this program free to the public, bring your pet on a leash for a walk on the trails at Sunset Hill Farm starting at 10 a.m. every Tuesday and Thursday. This program will offer wellness information and encouragement.

Year Round Run Club -- Discover the many routes that Sunset Hill Farm has to offer in this free program open to the public. Every Tuesday and Thursday from 8 to 9 a.m. participants will meet in the main parking lot and, with the leadership of an experienced trail runner, will run covering about five miles.

Women’s Walk Club -- For ages 18 and over. Take a fitness walk through the trails at beautiful Sunset Hill Farm, every Tuesday and Thursday from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. This is a free program.

Walk Fit -- Open to adults ages 18 and over. Learn about eating healthier and exercising regularly in this 14-week program at Sunset Hill Farm. Cost is $50.

Walk Valpo 13.1 Training Program -- Each Thursday from Aug. 15 to Nov. 10 at 6 p.m. you can help yourself train for competing in a half marathon -- by walking it. This 12-week program, led by Jenna Martin, RN, will guide, coach and encourage you -- helping to fulfill your goal of completing a half marathon. You too can be an athlete. Program fee is $75 and includes race registration and t-shirt, weekly training schedule, check-ins, workout tips and motivational e-mails. Participants must be able to walk 3 miles in 45 minutes. The first meeting will be at Sunset Hill Farm and following meetings will be at various locations. Sponsored by Porter Regional Hospital.

Meet the Animals and Family Hike -- On Friday, Aug. 9, and Friday, Aug. 23, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. families are invited to stop by Sunset Hill Farm and meet the animals, their caretakers and participate in a short hike with the parks department’s naturalist to learn about things going on in the park. This is a free program.

Family FOAM Fest -- An August event at Sunset Hill Farm Park, join in between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 17 for a day of family activities, a field of Foam, food, games and more. Cost is $5 per child.

Keeping Cool -- Learn techniques for “keeping your cool” during the late summer months such as yoga, meditation and deep breathing at Brincka-Cross Gardens on Sunday, Aug. 11, from 12 to 2 p.m. Cost is $20 for this program.

Acrylic Painting Classes -- Each Saturday through the month of August from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. learn acrylic painting from an experienced instructor at Sunset Hill Farm. There is also a Thursday night acrylic painting program all this month from 6 to 8 p.m. at Sunset Hill Farm. Cost for the program is $10 and includes a surface to paint on, or if you bring your own surface the cost is $5.

Kids Saturday Painting -- Youth painting instruction for all skill levels where the focus of the project is different each month. The next session is Saturday, Aug. 10, from 1 to 2 p.m. at Sunset Hill Farm. Cost for the program is $8.

Up Cycled Wearable Art Beginner Class -- Bring your old, broken jewelry, random beads or other objects to create your own piece of wearable art at Sunset Hill Farm on Sunday, Aug. 11 from 2 to 4 p.m. Cost is $20 and wire and tools will be provided.

Up cycled Wearable Art Intermediate -- This class will continue what was learned in the beginner class. Bring your old, broken jewelry, random beads or other objects to create your own piece of wearable art at Sunset Hill Farm on Sunday, Aug. 25 from 2 to 4 p.m. Cost is $20 and wire and tools will be provided.

Rental Information -- Both Sunset Hill Farm and Brincka-Cross Gardens are available for rental to host events. Sunset Hill Farm has all types of rentals from trails, Program Center, to shelters, picnic areas and the entire Park for your own event. The park’s Program Center seats 40 and has WiFi and overhead screen suitable to host a training workshop or corporate sales meeting. Birthday parties, baby/wedding showers are also welcome. Brincka-Cross Gardens Park is available for corporate retreats, meetings, and workshops in the Frank Lloyd Wright inspired home. Combine both gardens and home for a unique and memorable event.
