The week ending Saturday, July 25, saw the single highest seven-day total of new COVID-19 cases since the pandemic began: 121, the Porter County Health Department was reporting today.

Those 121 new cases exceed by 22 percent the previous record high: 99, reported in the week ending July 11. Last week’s spike also cut short the previous week’s drop, when the 99 new cases reported in the week ending July 11 fell to 78 cases in the week ending July 18.

Meanwhile, the Health Department was reporting 58 new cases over the last 72 hours (18 new cases on Friday), to bring the total so far to 1,080, up from 1,022 on Friday.

The Health Department reported 30 new cases on Saturday, tying a one-day record set on May 22; 13 on Sunday; and 15 today.

Of those 58 new cases, 45--or 78 percent--were diagnosed among the younger demographics: 21 in the 0-19 (106 total); 10 in the 20-29 (211 total); six in the 30-39 (170 total); and eight in the 40-49 (174 total).

To date, COVID-19 has been diagnosed in 106 children or teens in Porter County, or 9.1 percent of all cases (8.3 percent of all cases on Friday).

Meanwhile, four patients are currently hospitalized, up from three on Friday; and 872 have recovered, unchanged from Friday. Total active cases right now in Porter County: 168, up from 111 on Friday.

Also last week: the Health Department reported the first additional COVID-19 death since July 8: a Center Township resident in the 70-79 demographic, to bring total deaths so far to 40. That person was not a resident of a long-term care facility.

To date, 101 cases of COVID-19 have been reported in Porter County’s long-term care facilities, 27 have died, no one is currently hospitalized, and 74 have recovered, all unchanged from Friday.

For the record, according to the Health Department:

-- Positive cases are the number of individuals who get tested and have a positive test result. If an individual has multiple tests and receives multiple positive test results, it only counts as one positive case.

-- Positive antibody tests are not reported as positive cases.
