New Porter County C19 cases drop to seven

Back To Front Page

The Porter County Health Department was reporting this morning seven new COVID-19 cases over the last 24 hours (17 new cases on Tuesday), to bring the total so far to 1,374, up from 1,367 on Tuesday.

Of those seven new cases, four--or 57 percent--were diagnosed among the younger demographics: three in the 20-29 (total 278); and one in the 30-39 (total 202). Total 0-19: 162. Total 40-49: 230.

According to the records of the Chesterton Tribune, between July 1 and Thursday, Aug. 6, fully 406 of the 529 new cases in Porter County were diagnosed in persons under 50: or 77 percent.

However, over the last six days--since Thursday, Aug. 6--that proportion has dropped precipitously. Of the 124 new cases reported in that period, only 69 were diagnosed in persons under 50: or 56 percent. That fact would seem to indicate that the surge of new cases in the younger demographics in July and into the first week of August has begun to spread into the older and more vulnerable population.

Nevertheless, that surge has not been accompanied by any spikes in hospitalizations or deaths. Indeed, the number of patients currently hospitalized dropped to one today, down from three on Tuesday; while 1,130 patients have recovered, up from 1,228 on Tuesday. Total active cases right now in Porter County: 203, up from 198 on Tuesday.

No additional deaths were reported today. To date, 41 Porter County residents have succumbed to COVID-19.

So far, 101 cases of COVID-19 have been reported in Porter County's long-term care facilities, 27 have died, no one is currently hospitalized, and 74 have recovered, all unchanged from Tiuesday. The Health Department has not reported a new COVID-19 case in a long-term facility here since June 30.

For the record, according to the Health Department:

-- Positive cases are the number of individuals who get tested and have a positive test result. If an individual has multiple tests and receives multiple positive test results, it only counts as one positive case.

-- Positive antibody tests are not reported as positive cases.
