Memorial Day observances planned

Ceremonies around the country will honor fallen veterans this weekend. Duneland events include placing American flags on veteranís headstones in Chesterton Cemetery. This annual ritual of honoring our veterans, organized by American Legion Post #170, will be held this Saturday, May 24, beginning at 9 a.m. Everyone is welcome and encouraged to participate.

Memorial Day Services

American Legion Post #170 will lead Memorial Day services at, in this order, the Chesterton Cemetery, on E. Porter Ave., beginning at 9 a.m.; St. Patrickís Cemetery, on So. Calumet Rd., immediately following; then the Vietnam Memorial Wall, just south of the ambulance garage at Porter Ave. and ByPass 49; and finally, they will participate in the 1 p.m. ceremonies at Hawthorne Park, Porter.

The public is invited to honor our service men and women who have given the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our freedom at this yearís Memorial Day Service to be held in front of the Community Center at Hawthorne Park, 500 Ackerman Dr., Porter, on Monday, May 26 at 1:00 p.m. The program will include members of American Legion Post #170, vocalist Patty Raffin, and representatives from the Town of Burns Harbor, Town of Chesterton, and the Town of Porter. The Porter VFW Post #2511 will also hold a flag posting ceremony at the Post, 1290 Wagner Rd., at 1 p.m. on Memorial Day.
