On Saturday, June 22, 2013, local resident Herb Philbrick started a grand
life adventure -- the Chicago to Mackinac Solo Challenge.
This is a yacht race and there was only one crew member on Philbrick’s boat,
the “Geronimo,” himself. Philbrick had a corrected finish time that put him
in second place in the solo challenge.
20 boats left Chicago to sail Lake Michigan to Mackinac Island June 22, at 9
a.m. from Chicago’s Buckingham Fountain. At that same time there were about
12 boats that left Bayview, Michigan to sail Lake Huron to Mackinac Island.
This is an annual event sponsored by the Great Lakes Solo Society. This was
Philbrick’s first solo challenge.
Philbrick was inspired by a friend about 15 years ago, who did his first
Solo Mac on “Geronimo.” He was impressed and right away put the Solo Mac on
the top of his list of things not to do.
The friend managed to sell his boat to Philbrick and then managed to sell
the solo sailing idea.
