Local Memorial Day commemorations told

Remember the fallen this Memorial Day weekend and honor their sacrifice on our behalf, at several events in Duneland.

Sunday, May 26,

Vietnam Veterans of America,

Chapter 905

At 2 p.m. Sunday, May 26, the Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 905, will hold a service at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall at the southwest corner of Ind. 49 and East Porter Ave., just south of the Porter EMS ambulance barn.

Keynote speakers: Johnson (USMC Ret.), head of Junior ROTC at Portage High School; Porter Superior Court Judge Julia Jent, administrator of the Veterans Court; Logan Castro, an Eagle Scout candidate who has been landscaping the memorial site.

The Portage High School Junior ROTC will perform a drill and several honor guards will troop the colors.

A wreath will be placed at the wall and the names of 25 Northwest Indiana Armed Services members who gave their lives in Iraq and Afghanistan will be read.

A bagpiper is also scheduled to play “Amazing Grace” and a bugler “Taps.”

The service should last around an hour.

American Legion Post 170

American Legion Post 170 will hold its Memorial Day commemoration at the following sites on Monday, May 27:

* 10 a.m. at Post 170, 798 Wabash Ave.

* 10:30 a.m. at Chesterton Cemetery, 300 E. Porter Ave.

* 11 a.m. at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall, at the southwest corner of Ind. 49 and East Porter Ave.

* 11:45 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Cemetery, South Calumet Road.

* 1 p.m. at Hawthorne Park, Ackerman Drive in Porter.

These times are approximate, as there will be traveling from site to site.

Veterans of Foreign Wars

Post 2511

VFW Post 2511 will hold a memorial service at 1 p.m. Monday, May 27, at Post 2511, at 1290 Wagner Road in Porter.
