Liberty Township resident dies of COVID19

The Porter County Health Department was reporting this morning another COVID-19 death.

The victim was a Liberty Township resident in the 90-and-over demographic who did not reside in a long-term care facility. The death is the second in four days. On Saturday the Health Department reported the death of a Center Township resident in the 70-79 demographic, the first COVID-19 death in Porter County since July 30.

To date, 43 Porter County residents have succumbed to COVID-19. Eight of them were Dunelanders: six Westchester Township residents and two Liberty Township residents.

The Health Department was also reporting today 18 new COVID-19 cases over the last 24 hours (12 new cases on Monday), to bring the total so far to 1,607, up from 1,589 on Monday.

Of those 18 new cases, 16--or 89 percent--were diagnosed among the younger demographics: four in the 0-19 (215 total); seven in the 20-29 (327 total); three in the 30-39 (233 total); and two in the 40-49 (257 total).

To date, 215 cases have been diagnosed in children or teens, or 13.4 percent of all cases (13.3 percent on Monday). On July 7, only 39 children or teens had been diagnosed of the 765 total cases at the time: or 5.1 percent.

Four patients are currently hospitalized with COVID-19, up from three on Monday; and 1,400 have recovered, unchanged from Monday. Total active cases in Porter County right now: 164, up from 147 on Monday.

To date, 102 cases of COVID-19 have been reported in Porter County's long-term care facilities, 27 have died, one is currently hospitalized, and 74 have recovered, unchanged from Monday.

For the record, according to the Health Department:

-- Positive cases are the number of individuals who get tested and have a positive test result. If an individual has multiple tests and receives multiple positive test results, it only counts as one positive case.

-- Positive antibody tests are not reported as positive cases.

Duneland cases by township:

-- Westchester: 160 cases (157 on Monday). Twenty-two active cases.

-- Liberty: 84 cases (82 cases on Monday). Eleven active cases.

-- Jackson: 21 cases (unchanged from Monday). Two active cases.

-- Pine: 10 cases (unchanged from Monday). One active case.

Other Townships

-- Portage: 589 cases (584 on Monday). Fifty-seven active cases.

-- Center: 447 cases (443 on Monday). Forty active cases. Center Township's total includes Valparaiso University students.

-- Washington: 78 cases (77 on Monday. Five active cases. Washington Township's total includes Porter County Jail inmates.

-- Union: 84 cases (81 on Monday). Nine active cases.

State reports 841 new cases

The Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH) was reporting this morning 841 new cases of COVID-19 over the last 24 hours (688 new cases on Monday), to bring the total so far to 88,421, up from 87,592 on Monday.

ISDH was also reporting 16 additional COVID-19 deaths over the last 72 hours (five additional deaths on Monday), to bring the total to date to 3,253, up from 3,237 on Monday.

Lake County has reported 8,744 cases (8,700) and 292 deaths (292). LaPorte County has reported 1,122 cases and 31 deaths (1,114 and 31).

The total COVID-19 death count includes both confirmed and presumptive deaths to date. Presumptive deaths are those for which x-ray, scans, and clinical symptoms all point to COVID-19 but for which no positive test is on record. A total of 218 presumptive deaths was reported today, up from 217 on Monday.
