The late Judy Chaplin-florist, businesswoman, and a lover of the Dunes-was honored by the Duneland Chamber of Commerce with a special edition of the Duneland Distinguished Woman Award, at its annual State of the Chamber and Awards luncheon, held this year at The Spa in Porter.

Lorelei Weimer, executive director of the Porter County Convention, Recreation, and Visitor Commission-who came to know Chaplin well over the latter’s 11 years of service on the PCCRVC’s Board of Directors-presented the honor to Chaplin’s husband, Jim.

Weimer spoke in particular of Chaplin’s dedication and passion as owner, with Jim, of Shady Lawn Florist, which they purchased from her grandparents in 1969. “Judy’s level of commitment to her customers was remarkable,” Weimer said. “Her goal was to deliver the highest level of service and quality product, which she did consistently.”

“I can’t emphasize this enough that July loved the Duneland area and wanted it to prosper,” Weimer noted. “She served on the Duneland Chamber Board of Directors and then came to tourism, because she was passionate about our area. Judy understood the balance between growth and maintaining the charm that our area is known for. Judy and Jim were so committed to our area that they worked endless hours helping with the beautification of Downtown Chesterton.”

“Judy also loved Lake Michigan and the Indiana Dunes,” Weimer said. “Jim and Judy frequented the Indiana Dunes State Park almost daily to watch the sunset. She knew the value of the Dunes and she never took them for granted.”

“Judy was also a strong personality who had strong beliefs and she wasn’t afraid to speak out on what she believed,” Weimer added. “I can tell you first hand it is great to have someone like Judy in your corner.”

“Judy was known for her charismatic personality, her genuine smile, and how she extended joy to others,” Weimer concluded. “That’s what we will miss greatly about Judy.”

Laurie Wehner-Evans

Presented on Wednesday with the 2015 Duneland Distinguished Woman Award was Laurie Wehner-Evans. The Tribune will have more on Wehner-Evans and the luncheon’s other honorees Friday.
