Joy Johnston is 2004 Athena Award Winner:
The 2004 Athena Award was
presented to Joy Johnston by 2003 Athena honoree Sue Edds at the Chamber of
Commerce dinner Jan. 16. Johnston is joined here by her fellow volunteers at
the Duneland United Churches Resale Shop. Left to right are Madeline
Rhoda-Bush, Dan Johnston, Sue Edds, Jack Hopper, Joy Johnston, Bonnie
Hopper, Lil Swickard and Chuck Swickard. The National Athena Award was
underwritten by Mary Kay International & the Chesterton Woman’s Club. The
award is presented to a woman who demonstrates and supports the goals of
professional women by providing unselfish assistance, exhibiting initiative
and creativity, demonstrating excellence in her profession and providing a
valuable service to the community. Joy is a volunteer at the food pantry,
has been a Girl Scout leader, a Sunday school teacher and coordinator, a
youth group leader on the board of Deacons and the Women’s Guild. She chose
to work professionally at Self Help and Opportunity Enterprises and, with
assistance from her husband, has assisted medical personnel and provided
medical equipment supplies and support in Kenya and the Ukraine. She helped
provide clothes for a mission in Chicago, worked on Mercy Ships providing
hope and healing to the world’s poorest cities. Last, but certainly not
least she is currently dedicated to the Duneland United Churches Resale
Shop. Not only is she dedicated and organized, she takes the time to greet
each shopper and volunteer with sincere enthusiasm and warmth. It is not
just what she has done in her lifetime of service, but the way she does it.
She radiates a positive attitude, honesty and sincerity.
