Indiana reports surge in new cases and deaths

The Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH) was reporting today 2,880 new COVID-19 cases over the last 24 hours (1,766 on Wednesday), to bring the total so far to 155,246, up 152,396 on Wednesday.

ISHD was also reporting today 43 additional COVID-19 deaths over the last 24 hours (15 additional deaths on Wednesday), to bring the total to date to 4,082, up from 4,038 on Wednesday.

In addition, ISDH was reporting today 1,515 hospitalizations, up from 1,484 on Wednesday: the most hospitalizations since May 4, when ISDH reported 1,579.

Marion County was reporting today 25,151 cases (24,905 on Wednesday) and 785 deaths (785), the most in the state in both categories. Lake County was reporting 13,570 cases (13,380) and 355 deaths (352), the second most in the state in both categories. LaPorte County was reporting 2,228 cases (2,209) and 58 deaths (58).

The total COVID-19 death count includes both confirmed and presumptive deaths to date. Presumptive deaths are those for which x-ray, scans, and clinical symptoms all point to COVID-19 but for which no positive test is on record. A total of 234 presumptive deaths was reported today, up from 233 on Wednesday.

Indiana School Cases

Meanwhile, as of today ISDH was reporting 2,843 student cases statewide, 567 teacher cases, and 655 staff cases, unchanged from Wednesday.

There were 622 schools with no reported cases; 1,168 schools with one or more cases; and 576 schools have not reported, also unchanged from Wednesday.
