Genellas offers jewelry and charms for everyone

Entering into Genellas Jewelry Boutique is a little like stepping into a purple velvet jewelry box. There are cases of bracelets, necklaces, rings and charms, surrounded by deep purple walls, mirrored wall accents, and gauzy purple and black curtains; what owner Gina Lange calls “bling-bling” decor.

Located at 108 N. Calumet, in downtown Chesterton, just north of Northside Diner and across the street from Centier Bank’s branch, the little shop has something for everyone, said Lange.

The name Genellas, Lange explained, is a combination of two names to honor her grandmothers-Gen for Genevieve and Ella for Carmella.

Customers will find, amongst the many jewelry items, a few hand-beaded earrings, necklaces and bracelets, made by Lange herself. The shop grew out of her hobby once she retired from being a fast food manager.

“For me, jewelry is a hobby,” she laughed.

But the bulk of her offerings are a wide variety of rings, bracelets and necklaces by fashion jewelry lines, including sterling silver pieces, available for $60 or under, for each item. She also offers a line of men’s stainless steel fashion jewelry, with no piece over $45.

She also offers a nearly endless choice of charms. If you don’t see just the charm you hoped to find, Lange can special order just the right item.

There is also a dizzying array of Express Yourself Bracelet beads, which are ‘Pandora’ compatible. “You can add anything you like onto your bracelet,” Lange said. The beads come in all sorts of colors, styles and textures, with bracelets starting at $23.50.

Lange also offers a wrapped and ribboned combination of coordinated bracelets, earrings and necklace in a polka-dot cosmetic bag. “That’s an easy one for some of the guys,” she said, of the pretty, coordinated gift baskets. Each gift basket is priced at an affordable $23.50.

Also on offer are ‘Girls’ Night Out” party events. Lange will help customers celebrate a birthday, holiday or special event with an evening of build-a-bracelets, $35 each, with snacks and soft beverages provided. These are private parties held after the shop closes. “It can be really fun for a group of friends,” Lange noted. The package includes 2-3 hours of private boutique usage, choice from the entire line of Build a Bracelet, plus a choice of one charm (additional charms $5 each), and a Girls Night Out charm. Packages start at $35, with a minimum of 5 guests, maximum of 15. A small deposit is required at the time of booking.

Genellas fall hours are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, 12 to 8 p.m.; Saturday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Closed Sunday and Wednesday. Phone Genellas at 926-2228.
