Five more COVID deaths in Porter County

COVID-19 has claimed the lives of five more Porter County residents, the Porter County Health Department reported Tuesday.

Three were Portage Township residents; one, a Liberty Township resident; and one, a Center Township resident.

Two victims were in the 70-79 age group; one in the 40-49; one in the 80-89; and one in the 90-and-over.

Three of the five victims were residents of nursing homes.

To date, 108 Porter County residents have lost their lives to COVID-19. Deaths by township: in Duneland, 13 Liberty residents; 10 Westchester; and two Jackson. Outside of Duneland: 42 Center residents; 35 Portage; five Union; and one Boone.

Deaths by age group: five in the 40-49; 11 in the 50-59; 16 in the 60-69; 24 in the 70-79; 28 in the 80-89; and 24 in the 90-and-over.

In the 32 days since Oct. 30, COVID-19 has claimed the lives of 52 Porter County residents.

New Cases

Also on Tuesday, PCHD reported 140 new COVID-19 cases over the previous 24 hours (177 new cases on Monday), to bring the total so far to 8,993.

As of Tuesday, PCHD was putting the 0-19 age group at 1.2K cases; the 20-29 at 1.6K; the 30-39 at 1.4K; the 40-49 at 1.4K; the 50-59 at 1.4K; and the 60-69 at 1K.

The other demographic totals as of Tuesday: 70-79, 541 cases (536 on Monday); 80-89, 272 cases (265); and 90-and-over, 115 (113).

Hospitalizations

Meanwhile, PCHD reported 59 hospitalizations on Tuesday, up from 45 on Monday, an overnight spike of 31 percent.

Prior to Nov. 3, no more than 28 COVID-19 patients had ever been hospitalized at one time.

Of Tuesday’s hospitalizations, 12 were residents nursing homes.

Nursing Homes

Of the new cases reported on Tuesday, eight were residents of long term care facilities, to bring the total so far to 421, up from 413 on Monday.

Of those 421 LTCF cases, 12 were hospitalized on Tuesday, up from nine on Monday; 269 have recovered, unchanged from Monday; and 60 have died, up from 57 on Monday.

As of Tuesday there were 92 active COVID-19 cases in Porter County nursing homes, up from 87 on Monday.

Active Cases

PCHD reported 7,190 recoveries on Tuesday, unchanged from Monday. Total active cases in Porter County as of Tuesday, after subtracting the 7,190 recoveries and 108 deaths: 1,695, up from 1,560 on Monday

Other Indicators

-- New cases per 100,000 residents as of Tuesday: 541 (597 on Monday; 761 on Nov. 24).

-- Unique-individual positivity rate as of Nov. 23: 21.0 percent (20.8 percent on Nov. 22; 25.3 percent on Nov. 16).

-- Total-test positivity rate as of Nov. 23: 12.6 percent (13.0 percent on Nov. 22; 13.6 percent on Nov. 16). Note: both positivity rates lag up to eight days due to Indiana State Department of Health reporting methods.

Duneland Cases

-- Westchester: 1,044 cases (1,033 on Monday). Active cases: 155 (144 on Monday).

-- Liberty: 531 cases (524). Active cases: 89 (83).

-- Jackson: 188 cases (188). Active cases: 39 (39).

-- Pine: 46 cases (46). Active cases: 13 (13).

Other Townships

-- Portage: 2,861 cases (2,810 on Monday). Active cases: 522 (474 on Monday).

-- Center: 2,579 (2,533). Active cases: 512 (467).

-- Washington: 296 cases (296). Active cases: 55 (55).

-- Union: 485 cases (476). Active cases: 75 (66).
