Family 4th Fest offers full day of celebration food, games and fun

The annual 4th of July Parade in the town of Porter steps off at 9 a.m. This year's theme is “Grand Old Flag,” so join in and celebrate our Grand Old Flag!

The parade kicks off at 9 a.m. from Yost School. Families are encouraged to dress-up in red, white and blue, decorate bikes, wagons, strollers and walk in the parade as a family unit.

Mel Bigger, a long-time resident of Porter, Chesterton Lions Club member, and National Guard and U.S. Navy Veteran, is this year’s Parade Grand Marshal. The Parade will march through the town of Porter, and straight into Hawthorne Park where the Family 4th Fest will be underway.

All Duneland residents are invited to find a spot along the route and enjoy the 4th of July Parade.

Enjoy celebrating the Fourth of July in Porter, beginning with a pancake and sausage breakfast, hosted by the Lions Club, from 7-11:30 a.m. Start the day with a delicious Lions Club Pancake and Sausage Breakfast for only $5.

The 75th annual Lions Club Turtle Derby will be held at 11:00 a.m. on July 4, in the basketball courts in Hawthorne Park. Turtle Derby registration will begin at 10 a.m., for kids up to 16 years of age. The top three winners will receive a trophy and prize, heat winners will receive gift cards for The Port Drive-In. Entry is free. No snapping turtles, please!

Kids of all ages will have fun playing free games from Noon -2 p.m., Brick Toss, for all ages, from 3-5 p.m., early registration at 2 p.m. The patriotic poster contest runs from Noon-3 p.m.

There will be bounce houses, a rock climbing wall, and kiddie rides for toddlers.

Food vendors include Leroy’s Hot Stuff, Hot Diggity Dogs, Moon’s Kettle Corn & SnoCones, Ben’s Soft Pretzels, Kernels & Kones, Kime’s Old Time Flavored Sodas, and Dorie’s Elephant Ears, Lemonade Shake-ups, Pork Tenderloin Sandwiches, Burgers, Deep Fried Ravioli and more.

Karaoke starts at 3 p.m., followed by live music by Johnny V & the Killer Bzzzz band from 6-11 p.m. Kick back and relax in the Leroy’s Hot Stuff beer garden.

A fireworks show, set to patriotic music, will begin at dusk. Soloist Julie Riley will begin the show singing the Star Spangled Banner. Don’t forget to bring a blanket, chairs and bug spray!

The Duneland Business Initiative Group, which has organized this daylong celebration, extends special thanks to the Porter Parks Department, Towns of Porter, and Burns Harbor, Chesterton Lions Club, Leroy’s Hot Stuff, L.A. Bell, Chesterton Walgreens, Shelton’s Fireworks, Renee Vasquez, The Port Drive-In and the many volunteers for helping make this event a success.
