Duneland Y 'Pennies for Pasta' is fundraiser for cancer research

Back To Front Page

Children from the Duneland Family YMCA Childcare program have launched “Pennies For Pasta” to help raise money to help fight leukemia and lymphoma in northwest Indiana and Illinois.

In 2013, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS), helped support 976 families with research programs and patient support services. Local resident and leukemia survivor, Phoenix Bridegroom, and her mother Tammy have acted as spokespersons for “Pennies For Pasta” fundraising efforts.

Starting February 5, Phoenix and Tammy began visiting with children at the Y Preschool’s five classrooms, and school aged Child Care sites at Bailly, Yost, Brummitt, Jackson and Liberty Elementary Schools to explain how they could help.

At the Preschool, the Bridegrooms enjoyed some popcorn and watched the Charlie Brown movie that was provided by LLS. The movie helps young children understand cancer.

The class/site raising the most money will be rewarded with a pasta and breadstick party provided by Olive Garden. To date, the Y kids have raised $88. On February 26, all the sites will make birthday posters to celebrate Phoenix’s life just in time for her 8th birthday on Feb. 27. The birthday celebration will be held at the Duneland Family YMCA Preschool, within Chesterton Middle School at entrance #8.

Donations can be made in person to anyone attending Y Childcare Programs, or online at either of the following sites:
