Drive thru flu shot clinic sees 93 participants

Members of the Duneland community came out in numbers for the inaugural Drive-Thru Flu Shot Clinic at Hawthorne Park in Porter on September 23. Sponsored by the Duneland Seniors, Walgreens, and the Town of Porter Parks Department, a steady flow of seniors and not so seniors participated in the event.

Usually, the Duneland Seniors sponsor a health fair yearly in August. This year’s Covid-19 pandemic changed that.

Karen Wood, Chesterton Walgreens manager contacted the Duneland Seniors about plans for the health fair. When Cathy Ellis, Duneland Seniors president suggested a drive-thru event instead, plans got underway.

Duneland Seniors’ Rondi Wightman coordinated the event enlisting participation by the Town of Porter.’ ‘Goody bags’ by Life Care Center in Valparaiso and box lunches by Residences of Coffee Creek were handed out to the 93 registered participants.

Walgreens staff was on hand to register patients and administer the shots. Duneland Seniors volunteered to direct traffic, distribute hand outs, and monitor flu shot recipients for any immediate side effects. Porter Park Department staff ensured easy access to the site and setup.

President Cathy Ellis of the Duneland Seniors expressed thanks to the following for their support in this event: Addison Pointe, Alzhiemers Association, At Home Quality Care, Avalon Springs, Bright Star Home Care, Chesterton Manor, Dunes Hospice, First Light Home Health, Harbor Light Hospice, Heart-To-Heart Hospice, Home Health Crusaders, Life Care Center of Valparaiso, Meals On Wheels, Residences of Coffee Creek, Rittenhouse of Portage, StoryPoint, Symphony of Chesterton, VNA Hospice. She said they, too, were instrumental in providing this service to our community.
