Dunelanders can honor the life of the late Jo Winey Babcock by making a donation to the Duneland Y.

Then, under the Porter County Community Foundation’s Agency Matching Grant Program, that donation will be matched.

“Through this unique opportunity, the Y will receive an additional $1 for every $1 raised in endowment fund donations through March 31, 2018, allowing donors the opportunity to maximize tax deductions over a two year period,” the Duneland Y said. “In honor of her love for the Duneland communities and her passion for the Y, the Duneland YMCA Board of Directors unanimously voted to name this new fund the Jo Winey Babcock Memorial Endowment.”

“The Duneland Family YMCA was part of JoAnne’s life since it first opened in the old Thomas School in downtown Chesterton in 1966,” the Duneland Y said in a statement released today. “In high school, the Y was the place to meet friends, join tri-high Y, attend dances and more. After graduating from college, Jo became the director of the Y’s aquatics program, teaching swimming lessons to Duneland children and adults and overseeing pool operations. In later years she was involved in a multitude of fundraising efforts to benefit the Y, and served as a long time Y Board Member.”

“Through the years, Jo enjoyed Y activities and programs, and especially loved the outdoor swimming pool,” the Duneland Y noted. “The Y was an integral part of their life.”

“I think Jo would be extremely excited about the partnership between the Duneland Y and the Porter County Community Foundation and its ability to provide ongoing assistance for young children and their families,” said her husband, Greg Babcock.
